P&N Ground Schools are done through Kirkwood Community College Continuing Education Program and are taught by Certified Ground Instructors, Jan and Perry Walton.  Each Ground School Course, Private Pilot and Instrument Rating is held at the KTOS  (Kirkwood Training & Outreach Services) Center, in Armor Plaza at 3375 Armar Drive, across from Carlos O'Kellys in Marion.  Registering and purchasing of materials is done at the Marion Airport.

Private Pilot Ground School course (Airplanes & Helicopters) will include information on the following:
  • Basic Aerodynamics - How does an Aircraft fly?  Parts of an Aircraft
  • Aircraft Systems - Includes all the systems and mechanics of an Aircraft.
  • Flight Instruments - Identifies the different flight instruments, their purpose and location.
  • Regulations for Aviation - Everything has rules & regulations, these are for aviation
  • Airport Operations - How do you fly into and land at airports?
  • Airspaces - There are different types of Airspaces above us, cities, and airports
  • Weather - Weather determines whether we can fly or not.  How to read Weather maps and reports.
  • Aircraft Performance - How much weight can be put into a plane?  Is this runway long enough to take off from?
  • Cross Country Flying -  How to get from one airport to another.


Instrument Ground School course (Airplanes) will include the following:
  • Flight Instrument Systems - Review of systems in an Airplane and how they relate to IFR Flying
  • Weather - Review of Weather systems, maps and reports and how they relate to IFR Flying
  • Airspaces - Review of the Class of Airspace and how they relate to IFR Flying
  • Instrument Approaches - How to transition from the clouds to the airport environment
  • Arrival Procedures - How to transition from the IFR enroute flying to the Instrument Approaches
  • Enroute Procedures - Flying Cross Country on an IFR plan or flying by using instruments
  • Departure Procedures - Transitioning from the Airport environment to the enroute procedures
  • Regulations for IFR flying - Rules for Instrument flying

Both Courses will be held one night a week for 8 weeks each.  They are scheduled as follows:
